You probably already know about Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands. This island is a Brits Abroad holiday favourite, its location just off the west coast of Africa making guaranteeing blue skies and sun-drenched days on spectacular beaches all year round. While it’s naturally a classic summer holiday destination, it’s also enormously popular with those wanting to escape the winter weather – temperatures still reach the mid-20s around Christmas.

The island also carries a reputation as a party island in the south, so brace yourself for buzzing beach bars and dance-til-dawn clubs, but Tenerife has a quieter, more cultured side too, if you know where to look. Take a trip to Teide National Park for sunsets and star-gazing, book on of the island’s boat tours for a mesmerising whale-watching experience, or stay in the north of the island, where you’ll find more traditional charm and high-end hotels and luxury spa retreats.
