A trip to the capital of Lapland isn’t just for Christmas - although it’s at its busiest between December-March. There’s no shortage of winter fun to be had here with activities from sleigh rides pulled by huskies or reindeers, to snowmobiling, and even a private one-to-one with Santa himself! Many of Rovaniemi’s seasonal activities tend to sell out early, so make sure you book in advance.

But what about the rest of the year? The summer months are great for hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities. Santa Claus opens his summer golf course here in May, and thanks to the Midnight Sun (from late May to the end of July), keen golfers can play around the clock. Autumn is one of the best times to see the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi and the surrounding woodland takes on a serene beauty as the leaves turn red and gold. This is the time to catch some local festivals including The Old Market Square Carnival of Rovaniemi at the end of August, and Rovaniemi Week and Jutajaiset in September which celebrate local culture through art, music and workshops.
