An archipelago of four idyllic islands on Africa’s northwest coast, Madeira’s a colourful combination of contrasts that sit alongside each other in perfect harmony. Rugged volcanic mountains, misty forests and rocky beaches make for an otherworldly geological landscape, drawing in the intrepid adventurers and the hikers with its trails and jaw-dropping views.

The Cabo Girão clifftop is a must-see tourist attraction – this lofty 580m-high viewpoint has a suspended glass-floored skywalk, and the view will take your breath away. You can also take in the spectacular views from the Teleférico das Achadas da Cruz, a 600m-long cable car trip, and one of the steepest in Europe.

Yet Madeira is just as popular with those looking for a relaxing retreat, with a subtropical climate, luxury beach resorts and world-famous wine. Its capital city, Funchal, feels more like mainland Portugal, with the calçada Portuguesa (traditional black-and-white pavements), charming bakeries, cool snack bars and chic restaurants everywhere you turn. Public transport can be limited in Madeira, so it might be worth hiring a car, but local taxis offer day trips around the island, and Uber is available in Funchal, too.
