Cluj

As the ‘capital’ of Transylvania, Cluj has a bit of a wild child reputation, owing to its large student population, big nightclub scene, and its multiple electronic music festivals that draw in crowds from all over Europe. Cluj also has an arty side, with an uber-cool vintage vibe and all sorts of second-hand clothes stores around town, as well as the National Art Museum set in the spectacular Old Banffy Palace. Spring and autumn are great times to visit Cluj, when the city is in full bloom or brimming with copper-coloured leaves in the city’s many green spaces.

You’ll find trendy modern restaurants alongside authentic little bistros serving traditional Transylvanian fare, such as cold plate starters of bread, meats and cheeses, pork crackling, fasole buta (creamy beans), and hearty soups and stews. There’s a big coffee culture here, and brunch is a big deal too, so you’ll find plenty of places to eat after a big night out. And make sure you try the famous Transylvanian pálinka while you’re in Cluj – a sweet and delicious plum brandy.
