Algeria is the largest country in Africa with the Sahara desert to the south and the Mediterranean coast to the north. It boasts a diverse landscape including mountains for hiking and skiing during winter. However, in July, it can get blisteringly hot in the southern regions. Please be aware that before travelling, you’ll need to apply in advance for a visa from an Algerian embassy or consulate.
Algeria was a French colony for 132 years, and you can spot French influences everywhere from the buildings to the language and, of course, the food. The city is a mixture of contrasts with wide boulevards built next to labyrinthine streets, and elegant villas contrasting against socialist-era public buildings. The ancient Casbah, a steep and narrow maze of streets, lies at the heart of the city, west of the Pl des Martyrs. Here you’ll find several magnificent Ottoman palaces around the Djemaa Ketchoua. Another highlight worth visiting are the Jardin d'Essai botanical gardens, with avenues of palms and stands of exotic trees which can be easily reached by metro.
